Earth Day

Is Earth Day something to worry about?

Earth Day is on April 22. This is exactly one month after World Water Day on March 22. Another event in which we are expected to be aware of the importance of protecting the environment. There are hundreds of these events and maybe it is an idea to take a good look at this habit. Because we should worry when we think about why these events are being initiated.

For us people there is no other place to live than Earth. So you should expect it to be quite normal that we maintain Mother Earth well, with respect and with care. In principle this should be so normal that it is abnormal that we have an Earth day and a World Water Day.

Let’s take a look at another place where we live, our house. We do not consider to organize a ‘roof’ day, or a ‘front door’ day or a ‘tap’ day. It is so normal that you keep your house in good condition that we do not even ‘think about it’. So why is it that we maintain our house so well as an automatic process? Why is it that we do not automatically maintain our other house, Mother Earth?

If you think about it, it is strange that we do not have an ‘inbuilt process’ to maintain our house Mother Earth, while we do have it for our homes. We pollute water, pollute the air, we fish our seas empty, we dump nuclear waste under the ground, we dump garbage in and on the soil, etcetera. So why the difference?

Maybe one of the differences is ownership? The house is private, and Mother Earth is from everybody. And we know that as soon as ‘everybody’ is responsible, nobody takes responsibility anymore. So what could be the solution for this part of the problem? Maybe the solution is that we privatize Mother Earth? As soon as you create ownership, you create responsibility. And as soon as you have responsibility, you get the stage of ‘automatically inbuilt maintenance processes’. Once we reach this stage we do not need an awareness creating Earth Day anymore. That would be great, wouldn’t it?
